About drinking the water and eating at restaurants and road stands:

Mexico’s tap water has gotten dramatically cleaner in recent years; however, it is best to stick to bottled water.  You are more likely to get a gastrointestinal infection from food.  Food contamination is generally caused by not being refrigerated.

The restaurants that cater to Americans are generally safe for eating.  Be sure to ask if ice cubes or water are “Agua Purifica.” If you see lots of Americans eating there, the food and drink is probably safe.  Bottled water and canned drinks are absolutely safe.  If you do get sick, Cipro works great and fast. (Please be aware of any contraindications for any drug and consult with your doctor as this is not medical advice.)
